I have never met a sugar beet face to face, but on being invited to take part in this exhibition, I researched, dug in my memory, looked at digital images and dove into them. I remembered that on my first December train journeys, on arrival in Europe, I looked out at those huge dark, frosted mounds and asked what they were. Sugar beet! Ah, not cane here. But didn't get close. Now, with this project and getting to know Klaus, I realised that I am actually quite a fan of root vegetables..beetroot, carrotts, turnips, celery, parsnips…..and always like the autumn tastes and the earth on them. So I know some of the relatives pretty well! Then I just did what I often do with a new area of interest, I just drew, moved lines around, got into shapes and surfaces and textures and, in effect, did a series of getting-to-know-you portraits of vegetable life not yet encountered ! The decision to include some large water colours from my series made in very intense contact with my wild studio garden quite some years back, was made quickly with KKB. I am looking forward to meeting the real thing and also seeing what other artists have come up with.
